Day 62

Camped at mile 963, 8406 feet
19 miles + 1 off trail mile
The meadow grass girls took us to work with them the next day, which was about a mile down the road towards Yosemite Valley, we saw their plants and set up it was a pretty cool spot. They pointed us in the direction of the trail by saying "go around the meadow, follow the tree line to the end of the big rock, turn left, find the river and follow it down stream and either ford it when you can or just keep following it until you hit the bridge were you will meet the trail. The trail isn't really established but you'll find your way." So we made our way down to the river and forded it and got back onto the trail. It took about a mile to reach it, and we missed about 5 miles of trail, but some of those would have been walking out of the campsite and down the road so I think this way was much more enjoyable, plus I got to use my compass (fourth time so far, first time for actual navigation)!

Two big ups today and a big down. With a fairly heavy pack, 8 days of food, this will be our longest carry. Feet are tired, I am tired, although I did sleep like a rock last night. Dunked in a stream today. Laundry and shower done in 30 seconds. I haven't seen a bar of soap since Independence and I'm not planning to until Tahoe (18 days). That'll be a total of 3 real showers with soap for the whole of the Sierra.

I have developed a bit of a strange chaff on my calves a week ago from my heels hitting my legs as I walk. It hurt for a while but I think it's getting better. I also put a hole in the side of my shoe, combination of walking lots of miles and accidentally stabbing it with a trekking pole. Oops. good thing I'm switching shoes out when we get to South Tahoe (127 more miles). It's too hot for socks tonight but the mosquitoes are really bad here, not as bad as that midnight at Sally Keys but still pretty annoying.

We met sketch pad and three others at camp. And I met a guy I met in hiker heaven like 1.5 months ago at a stream crossing!

My soup has onions in it from a stream crossing a few miles back.

Great day, tiring but great. In the bag hiding from the mosquitoes by 8 pm. Two deer walked by, maybe 15 feet away.
