I made tea in the morning as we packed up, paid for the ferry and bed then headed onto Mono Hot Springs to pick our resupply boxes. It's about 5 miles down the road from VVR. We got a hitch from a nice guy and a dog who was already giving a hitch to another hiker out to Fresno. The general store was small but had lots of snack options unlike the picked over VVR options, just too many hikers up there not willing to do the extra 5 miles I guess. There was a tiny bit of WiFi, enough to send a few texts and emails but not to update the blog, it's been hard in the Sierra, maybe it'll get better in northern California.
We met a couple on their 36 wedding anniversary trip to Mono while we were eating ice cream, sitting on wooden rocking chairs in the dirt parking lot of the general store/post office. They said they'd drop off their ice at their camp and come back to give us a ride up to VVR. Awesome folks!
We got in line for the ferry back to the trailhead and it took a good three hours to get a spot, one of the boats ran out of gas and the second boat had to run a rescue mission. While we were waiting we met Morgan, who was hiking the figure 8 with some friends, never heard of it but it sounds like it covers a lot of beautiful areas. Morgan works in the ER and is into pack rafting, super cool dude. He gave us a couple avocados.
We finally got a spot on the ferry at around 2 and got back to the PCT just after 3. We wanted to try to make it over Silver pass and camp on the other side but I forgot to put snacks in my pocket so I got hungry and started to feel rather conked out about a half mile from the pass. We found a good flat area and called it for the night. Good view of some amazing mountains from up here near Silver pass. Lots of frogs in a nearby creek.I can hear them but can't see them. It's a good spot, not to many mosquitoes. Had a fantastic dinner of lentils, rice, and half an avocado in a tortilla. Played cribbage as the mountains turned pink in the distance. So sleepy!
