Day 55: Muir Pass

18.6 miles
10620 feet

I had a rough time with the 4000 foot climb this morning. My calves were cranky. I was tired and hungry. I think hiker hunger is starting to take hold. Had some hummus about 8 miles in and that fixed things for a while.

Met a guy catching and swabbing yellow legged mountain frogs to see what levels of fungus they had. There is a fungus killing off the frogs in the Sierra apparently, he says this lake has a very healthy population.  Same yellow legged frog from the closure in the Angeles Mountains.

So many tadpoles!

We reached the snow and several semi sketchy snow bridges over flowing melt rivers but there were two girls (Twang and Blaze) in front of us and we watched them go first.

Muir pass is at 11974 feet. There is a stone hut that was built in 1930 near the top. This pass was different, it wasn't just up and over is was more of a really long snowy approach and even longer snow decent, maybe 4 miles of snow total. It was awesome.

Super Slushy

Trail is underwater

Passed up some very nice campsites between Evolution lake and Mt Darwin because we had a recommendation for a good spot from a few guys we met in the hut. We did am extra half mile and ended up with an amazing spot on a ledge overlooking the valley. Watched the sunset and played cribbage. Emily won.

Great day. We went far without even trying to push.  Some of the most beautiful country so far.
